View Full Version : Model Orientation?

We have a project where the model is at a 30 degree orientation on the site. When we place it on the sheets it will want to be orthogonal (horizontal). Do people recommend laying out model per site orientation or sheet orientation when setting up projects? Would appreciate people input on correct way to start this project. Thanks.

You can specify True North and Project North for just this purpose.

Check the Revit Help or search here on this.

Always model in the orientation you want to display or are comfortable with. Look at Project North and True North for more options. If additional "rotations" are needed Scope boxes can be used as a work around..

I always work true north up, if I can when I start a project. Then I just rotate the plan view to orthogonal to work in them and place them on sheets.

Of course some times you have to re-adjust true north later.

I'm pretty adamant about modeling in Project North - the way you want the bulk of the documentation laid out on sheets. Model to the dominant orthogonal orientation for better modeling accuracy, and easier layout of dimensions later on in the documentation process. The few views of your documentation that need to be oriented "true" are individually set to respond to the angle you specify as the DIFFERENCE between Project North and the site True North.

Another benefit is that by modeling in Project North, you can then link your development model into a separate Site model for easy studies of different angled placement to most benefit from natural daylighting penetration, orientation to site-specific wind direction, etc. That study can then inform what is the BEST angle difference to set in the building model, rather than a 'parallel to the property line' approach.

In Revit you NEVER should Model "true north" except for your site model. Model buildings in Project north, then use the rotate to true north tool to set the true orientation. This way if the orientation changes you just update the orientation, not have to rotate hundreds of callouts a small degree.

Agree with the posts the above. MUCH easier to rotate true north than project north.

I've always been a bit puzled with orientating the project to true or project north, but truth is all Revit projects we worked, project north and true north were coincident, so never gave it much thought. Not because the buildings were all North oriented, but because they were never orthogonal, so there wasn't much point orienting the project.

The issue I have now, is I modelled, by lapse, this new project, with the orientation setting in "project north" when it should have been true North. But in this one, I need to orient it, however, if I rotate it, because it can only be done in "true north" mode, what will happen is true north is project north and vice-versa.
Can I fix this?

Thanks

I've always been a bit puzzled with orientating the project to true or project north, ..., what will happen is true north is project north and vice-versa....?
