Discrepancy in V/G overrides for linked models

I have all of my view templates set to override linked models to Custom and the Annotation tab for each linked model set to Custom and the box for Show Annotation ticked off. This works to hide level and grid annotations in the linked models from showing up. However several other things do not follow this setting - particularly any generic annotations nested in families in the linked model. I have to turn the annotation check box back on, and then select all the categories and turn those off to get the generic annotations go away.

Is this a bug? I'm betting it's been this way forever.
