View Full Version : Family Trouble

I've been through the tutorial and have looked through the help, but I am still having some trouble grasping how to create a family.
For example, I'm trying to create a Roof Fascia, so I selected a roof based template, but that isn't working. How do you know what templates work best in what scenarios? I can do doors and window or at least modify families, I've got a basic understanding of the parameters and how to make them work for you....But I'm still having trouble.
Does anyone know where there is some more info on creating families?
Anyone with a good analogy on how to create families.
Thanks,
grover

You seem to be missing a trick here. Some families, those which follow a path based on a host entity, are only profiles, so you would need to create a family using the hosted profile template which would show the cross sectional pattern.
In the model you then define the path the profile will follow and voila, fascia, gutter, wall sweep, floor edge trim etc.

Also, to make it even easier, use the tool _ Host Sweep, from the Modelling tab ( Wall Sweep Wall Reveal, Roof Fascia, Roof Gutter, Slab Edge ) to set up the hosted elements by single clicks rather than defining a sweep path. Then substitute your custom profile for the default one .

Thank you, I finally got the "custom fascia" to work, although the corners do not mitre, but at least I have them in there.
I am missing something and sooner or later it will get into this thick skull of mine :).
Keep trying until I "master" families.

Did you use host sweeps to create the fascia ? Maybe thats why the fascia is not mitring.
Refer this thread (www.zoogdesign.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1181&highlight=) for more information.

beegee,
Yes I'm using the Host Sweep for my fascia. I've tried it in both the roof plan and 3D views. Also, if I stop I'm using the "Add Segment" tool.
I have read that thread, right after I made the original post.
Thanks for your help.

Greg,
The file is fairly large, 10MB.

If you want, make a copy and go to a 3D view. Select everything and then use filters to de-select just the roof, walls and fascia. Delete everything but these elements and post that. It should bring the file down a bit and someone here can take a look at it.

Also purge unused families

Greg,
Thanks for the reply...I'll do that, but one question first. If I'm working in worksets, will a save as affect the central file? I wouldn't think so as long as I don't save to Central, but thought I'd ask first.
Thanks,

Better let a workset master answer that, but I don't think a save as will affect the central file because the central file is not getting saved as.

Greg,
I've erased everything except the roof and fascia, purged unused familes, deleted all the views not in use, etc... and my file is still over 7MB. Any thought on how to get it smaller so I can post it.
Thanks,

Have you done a "save as"? That will reduce file size more than just saving.

Thanks Allen, that helped a lot.

Greg,
Ok, I finally got a file to which I can add an attachment. Thanks for taking a look at the roof and fascia.

Wondering if someone could take a look at the attachment in the previous post to see why my fascia will not mitre at the corners?
Thanks,

I looked at your file but could not solve it, sorry
I remeber a previous post on a similar subject
"... it could not be done because in the real world such a join would also be impossible... "
Makes sence to me

This is something that Revit will not do at present, miter a rake and a fascia. I think Revit is smart enough to know that the profile is not the same on the rake as it is on the fascia. You could create a new profile for the rake moulding that would match up with the fascia and run it past the fascia. Not perfect, but works in elevations.

Have you tried an in-place sweep for the fascia ?
