When a custom shape file was used in a drawing, anyone that wants to view that drawing needs to have a copy of that shape file. But if you could retain a shape definition, like you can with a linetype definition, this would not be necessary. You would also need the ability to "redefine" a shape definition and have the ability to "purge" unused shape definitions.
