The only way I have found of creating additional Revit 2011 materials is to copy and edit an existing Revit material and replace the provided bitmap with one of my own.

As WS has stated you can only really edit the materials that come standard with Revit. I would recommend looking at getting some good quality materials from http://mrmaterials.com/. Although not all the materials work inside of Revit they do have an extensive list of materials that does work inside of Revit.

One downside that I've found with materials in Revit is in the export to FBX and subsequent import into Max. Only the name of the original material is copied over so if you start with one and make multiple copies in Revit with different names you'll wind up with multiple materials with the same name in Max. I hope Autodesk fixes this in the next FBX update.
