Parameter Questions

I have been tilting at windmills trying to figure out where to create the parameters to specify such things as material, finish, hardware groups, and detail callouts for doors in my project. I've looked at type and instance parameter defined in the family editor and also at the use of key schedules to organize my schedules. I had been trying to determine what parameters to add to each family to allow consistency in scheduling, but now it occurs to me that I shouldn't add these parameter to the families at all. I should create all of these parameters in a key schedule(s). If I do, I can't take advantage of family parameters to schedule parameters that don't vary from door to door, but at the same time I'm not spending time trying to crate consistency across family parameters that appear to be inconsistent at best straight out of the box.

Does anyone have insight into the question of how much (if any) of these parameters should be created in the family editor?
