Void Limitation/Application Question

Is there any way to make a void that interacts with a generic model- or a generic model that interacts with a void when placed as a component in a model? Do Voids only work with certain type of families- like "inplace" families?

I'm looking, essentially, to do the same kind of boolean operation that I can do with SOLIDS and the SUBTRACT command inside AutoCAD. (Please dont' give me the "Revit isn't AutoCAD lecture!"- as I know that already... :)

Currently, they have to be IN the component, as a Face Based Family with a void in it. Otherwise, Face based families with voids work on system families, and in place (i think, im not sure as i dont use in place families often).
