View Full Version : How to make/model curved beams in Revit?

OK, so for the last year I have faked curved beams by sweeping a roof profile and using a roof object.
How do I model or place a curved beam in Revit 2011? I know I need to be in the beam tool of the structure palette, but after that I am at a loss.
Can anyone run me through the process?
Thanks

Click the Beam tool, and look at the top right of the ribbon. There will be a sketch option for Arcs.

Go to an elevation or section.

Set the work plane to a vertical surface or wall, or create a vertical reference plane
in a plan view, name it and select it from the list.

Then go to Structure>Beam>and load a beam family of your choice.
Then draw an arc in the elevation view and click when finished.
Set detail level to fine and you can see the beam.

This also works in Plan Views if you need the beam to be curved in plan.

See attached.

By that I mean, is there a way to plumb cut the end of the curved beam? Currently my beam is two concentric lines with end lines that are perpendicular to the curved lines. A large curved glulam (6.75 x 18) ends up with the bottom arc sitting into the interior of the wall it sits on and the top arc outside of the wall.
Again, thanks:)

Draw a reference plane, and use it to "trim" the beam end by using Cut Geometry tool.

Once again, help with visuals...it doesn't get any better!
