Just found out something others might find valuable. When using the Wall Opening tool on the Home Tab > Opening Panel, if your wall is using Attach Top and/or Bottom and you try use the Wall Opening tool to cut an opening not in the unconnected extended portion(s) of the wall enabled by Attach Top and/or Bottom it will tell you that you are not cutting the wall and will not work. The unconnected height of the wall needs to coincide with the sketched opening you make. If you move the opening size you might also have a problem so adjust the unconnected height to assist in making the tool work.

Trying to "hi-jack" a thread normally prevents you from getting a helpful answer. There is a Revit MEP forum for this type of question.

Yeah - I find that good practice is to always have the wall/curtainwall/column etc go past the object one is attaching it too - theres all sorts of different occurances similar to what you have found that results in undesirable outcomes if this doesnt happen including:
curtain wall gridline - if one attaches curtainwall to roof, and for some reason the attachment breaks, you will lose your gridline if above natural height of curtainwall
windows in walls: if attachment breaks window could disappear if above natural height of wall

etc
