how are window and door assemblies created?

in some of my school projects I want to model an entire glass wall, but I can't seem to figure it out. in ADT its very straight froward.

do I have to create a :custom: family item ?

Check out the tutorials on Curtain Walls and Curtain Systems. Unless you're doing some pretty wild modelling you shouldn't have to create a custom family for much of anything. The curtain wall/system tools are very versatile and powerful.

If it is easier for you to do it in ADT...then you can do everything 'before you know how to do it' in Revit. Just read the relevant help file.
