Having some interesting things happen this morning. First it took a couple of attempts to get my file open this morning. First try it just stopped responding, had to restart revit, second try said that it wouldnt open, third try was a charm. Then as I was working on a detail it started closing windows on me and there was a ghost image of the detail that I was working on over all the rest of my views. very odd behavior I must say.

Some more details would be helpful:
1. Size of file ( MB )
2. Scale/scope of project
3. Linked models?
4. Worksharing? ( try opening again, but select only a single workset )
5. LAN / WAN ?
6. Design Options?
7. Audit on Opening Central?
8. Hardware on workstation / server adequate? ( RAM esp. )
cheers

Some more details would be helpful:
1. Size of file ( MB )- first file is around 54mb, second central is around 72mb
2. Scale/scope of project- both remodels
3. Linked models?- no linked models only images.
4. Worksharing? ( try opening again, but select only a single workset )- no first file, yes second file.
5. LAN / WAN ?- LAN
6. Design Options?- no first file, yes second.file.
7. Audit on Opening Central?- not today.
8. Hardware on workstation / server adequate? ( RAM esp. ) no on laptop, woefully inadaquate unfortunately, yes on server.
also moved the central file this morning, which may be causing some of the issues.
cheers
sorryf for the delay it keeps telling me that I havent entered enough characters

Not too large for 32 bit OS w/ 3-4GB RAM.
2. Scale/scope of project- both remodels--
Phasing problem, perhaps?
3. Linked models?- no linked models only images.
Aha--how many images, and are they huge file sizes? I'd check that right away. Revit's a bit finicky on raster images.
4. Worksharing? ( try opening again, but select only a single workset )- no first file, yes second file.
5. LAN / WAN ?- LAN
Cat 5 or 6 cable, Gigabit switch?
6. Design Options?- no first file, yes second.file.
7. Audit on Opening Central?- not today.
Try Opening and Auditing.
8. Hardware on workstation / server adequate? ( RAM esp. ) no on laptop, woefully inadaquate unfortunately, yes on server.
Server RAM is important--but the file sizes are not too huge for a 32 bit setup with 3-4 GB RAM.

Yes--did you Detach from Central, move the file by Save -As to new location, Open, make a Central File, Save-as local copy, then Synch?
cheers
My Revit is misbehaving as well although not to the degree mentioned above. I'm running the current maintenance upgrade in 2011 on a 32 bit OS. Was working on an in-place extrusion and the application just evaporated. Disappeared without warning to save as a recovery file. I've also been getting alot of save as recovery errors lately. Not sure what if anything I can do on this end, maybe reboot.

Have you updated to service pack 2? We had some issues with having to launch Revit 2011 twice before the service pack.

I'm suspecting a memory limitation due to 32 bit OS--
consider moving to Win 7 64--add a lot of RAM.
Everything is much more stable, esp. in 2011 and larger projects.
You should also check your display/graphics card/driver and try turning on/off
Direct 3D hardware accelleration and see if there are any drastic behavior changes.

I would love to add more ram and upgrade my OS but due the age of my laptop it is already max'd out at 2 gig ram and 32bit OS. Hoping that a new laptop is in the near future but I am not holding my breath.
thanks for all the replies

what would you recommend on the server?

For servers,
Windows 2008 64 bit (R2 or not? depending on how "Revit Server" add-in will work?)
Fast Seagate SAS drives, as large capacity as you can get in RAID config.
Min. 8GB RAM server class --or more
Min. Quad Xeon Server class CPU
Fast front side bus

Thanks Cliff, sorry I should of added this earlier. Server 2003 32 bit, 2 gig ram, raid hd array and it is around 3 yo. unfourtunately there are no plans to upgrade in the future, that is until it melts down.
Thanks again

If youve only got 2 GB of RAM in a laptop, i can assure you that you can forget about the server being your problem. You said youre getting "ghosting," like the detail is "there" but you cant see it until you hove on it? And residual graphics problems?
Yeah, youre running out of memory. Time for an upgrade in laptop. I have 4GB in winXP32 on an old home computer, and it runs.... But barely. And if i open any project of decent size, its done. In a mater of minutes,
A 500 dollar laptop from Dell will have more RAM and power than your current one might, although id consider a pretty serious rig.
