I have a Revit file, submitted by a consultant, that has an embedded family. I do not have an RFA file for it and would like to make one if I can. As it is a light fixture with all the lighting characteristics, it's not a simple matter.
Is there a way of extracting the information embedded in the project file for this one family into an RFA file?

Go to the project browser, under families, find the family in question, expand it and right click on it, then click 'save'. Simples!

Not sure about all the parameters, but...
Select the consultant's file, then tab so the fixture is hightlighted. Use the Cop to Clipboard toolbar/button.
Then paste back to your file. The family now exists in your file, and you can save it to disk.

Piling on...
Select the family (same works for a nested family in a host family)
Click Edit Family (this opens the family)
Save As
Alternatively
Application Menu (Big R) > Save As > Library > Family
Choose the family from the Family to save drop down list box
