Trying to cut a round hole in a compound wall, but when I do, it makes all layers of the compound wall go up to the same height.

Do you mean a Stacked Wall? Or just a wall type that has several compound materials
such as CMU and Brick Veneer?
Either way, you can cut a round hole a couple of different ways:
1. Edit the wall's profile--just draw a circle when in sketch mode, then finish the sketch.
2. Use an in-place Void extrusion
3. Use a "frame-less Window" family--Open a round window family, save-as, then remove
the extrusions for the glass or unwanted trim, etc.--save-load into project, then insert into your wall, using it to cut holes. You can use instances for various sizes just like a window,
and they will schedule as well.

thanks for your 3 suggestions
I had tried the 1st but all wall layers end up at the same (top) height.
I tried the 2nd but was unable to get the void to cut the walls. Probably doing something wrong?
I tried the 3rd and it worked. Thanks so much!!

pat, to clarify why you couldn't get the void to cut the wall, once you build the void you need to use the Cut Geometry tool, then select the void and the item it should affect. Otherwise, the void doesn't know what it should cut!

Thank you!
The user guide did not mention that where it describes void extrusions. Should that surprise me?
