It's been a long day and it's totally possible that I'm just not seeing straight, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to tag an area.

Here are the steps I follow:

Home tab --> Room & Area --> Area Plan

So that goes fine and makes an area plan. Purple area lines are all there and all looks good. Now I go to try and tag the area and I can't place a tag. No matter where I click or hover there's just nothing happening. I eventually have to cancel out of the area tag command.

Attached is the sample file if it helps.

Thanks in advance for any help!

You've created the area boundaries, but you haven't created an area yet. From the Home tab click on the Area tool and choose Area. Then you can click within the area boundaries to create areas. You can also choose the 'Tag on Placement' option when you are in the Area contextual ribbon.

Thank you very much. I knew it was something simple.

Since we're on the subject of area boundaries I'll ask another question. Why do the boundary lines have overlapping or not quite closing ends? Graphically I mean. They actually do close and form a valid boundary, but they always look unclosed. Screen shot attached.

This is just a guess, but it looks like the boundary lines extend to the walls justification line. I could be wrong, though.

You are probably on to something there. These "messy" lines only occur when "Apply Area Rules" is selected. Drawing my own boundary lines create clean intersections.

It was just driving me nuts since Revit is always so dependent on closing all your boundaries. I kept trying to trim those open intersections. :)

Multilieb has it -- after reading through the (worthless) Autodesk help file on this I've spent a half-hour fumbling through it and discovered the following process for Revit 2017:
1) View --> Plan Views --> Area Plan Select the level you want your area plan on. This opens a new view with purple boundary lines on the walls in the view.
2) Architecture --> Area --> Area Put your cursor inside the area defined by the purple lines described above. The default is to automatically tag it, but you might have to do that in a subsequent step.
3) Annotate --> Tag All --> Select "Area Tags"

Hope this helps someone
