Keeping fields when updating a table

Is there a way in AutoCAD 2010 to keep fields from changing to text when updating a table?
I created a table from an Excel spreadsheet then overwrote some cells with field data from the drawing. I then made some changes on the Excel spreadsheet and updated the table. All the fields were lost. Is there any way to "protect" these cells in the table so that they don't change when I update the table?

I dont think that there is, unless you setup a separate table for the fields, and then update a second table that is linked to the excel file.

Try checking off the USE EXCEL FORMATTING when you do dual linking. See the attached image.
