I have been saddled with the task of figuring out the best/easiest process for printing color 3D models. Autodesk offers an add-on that will export a .rvt model to a .stl file. The exporter works well and is very easy to use. However, .stl files are monochromatic (white only).

I have gotten a .wrl file out of 3dsMax that has solid colors on it. This process was not easy or quick, and left a lot to be desired in terms of detail.

Does anyone have any experience with 3D printing in color? I would like to be able to map image files to the model, and show brick, shingles, carpet, and other variegated colors on these models. What is the best file type for this application?

Do you know of a forum or tutorial for 3D printing, or specifically for the Zprinter 450?

Thank you for your time and help
Chris
