Rotating a material pattern on a mass

Mass Newbie question:

Whereas for a surface (painted) material on an in-place family, I can select a pattern line and rotate the pattern without affecting the shape of the object, if I try the same with the material pattern applied to the surface of a mass, the mass surface itself rotates...?

I just created a new Conceptual Mass in RAC 2012, and tried applying ( painting on ) a Material with a surface pattern onto one of the faces--it's a simple rectangular form.

I can only select a Drafting Pattern inside the Massing Family editor, which explains why you can't rotate
the pattern--only Model Patterns can be rotated.

I then loaded the Mass Family into a new Project, and edited the Material surface pattern, and changed it to a Model Pattern. Then I tried to rotate it, in an elevation view--and I could tab to the pattern line, select rotate--
but no go--error message says "cannot rotate into this position".

Not sure if there's a fix for this?
