If you were used to using autocad in the past, think of worksets like layers. Instead on lines being on a layer, you have objects (or parts of a building on worksets). For example, when i set up worksets mine usually look like this.
00-foundation
01-slab on grade
02-columns
03-braces
04-2nd floor framing and slab.......
08-roof
99-links
Get the idea?
I've also seen them split by say, cladding components or canopies. The main idea is so that you can turn of that workset to be able to see thing better. Just like turning off a layer.

The Mastering Revit Structure 2010 book by Wiley/Sybex has a solid chapter regarding worksets if you can get your hands on a copy.

When you link model together you can turn on and off Workset with the linked model.
Example: - linked few models to get a site pile/footing layout. turn on only foundation work set. (You have to make sure that all the pile and footings are in the one foundation work set.)
Very easy same as the layer system in cad...
