View Full Version : chain link fence

I have downloaded the chain link fence from Rich Binning's blog, based on the work of John Tocci.
http://www.integr-8.com/besidethecursor/2010/04/fencing-in-revit-continuous-chain-link.html
I followed the instructions exactly and got a perfect chain link fence. However, I have a couple of problems with the result. First of all, the fence is transparent in 3D but not in elevation. Why would the material be transparent in 3D and opaque in elevation? I made sure the elevation view was sufficiently deep to show objects beyond.
Second, I need to change the heights of the two rails to 12' and 3". I can edit the type and the rails respond correctly, but nothing I do gets the link pattern to follow the rails.
I edited the profile and reloaded it into the project, even getting the "replace existing file" warning, but nothing happens.
Anyone familiar with this?
Mike, you might be able to get someoen to look closer at it by posting the one you created instead of someone trying to recreate it (and trying to recreate the problem at that)
Just a thought..

Windows work the same way by default you will have to edit the baluster panel to be transparent in Front/Back elevations, but then you won't get the chain look. You have to override the railing to be transparfent to keep the chain look.
As far as not stretching, don't know, I downloaded from the link you provided and set rails at 12' & 3" and everything stretches.

This is one of those :banghead::banghead::banghead: moments. I'll have to spend more time with it.
Incidentally, I found the chain pattern to be especially convincing.
Thanks.

I created my curtain wall Fence and all looks great, i assigned a cross hatch model pattenr with 100% transparency and it all looks good until you try to render or use realistic views. The Chain Link Fence material Autodesk provides is not working for me. The one called wood stockade works fine however. Any one else have an issue with that material?

Update: it was that machine for some reason my laptop will not show it in realistic views or render it but copy that file ot a different desktop machine and it works just fine....weird and that sucks.

Don't forget to double-check those Views when you go to plot.
We had a similar fence on one of our projects, and the when we printed it,there were missing sections at random along the fence.
Looked a bit embarrassing when we showed a prison fence with big gaps in the fence.
Turns out the Revit plotting wasn't too happy with the material we used for the chainlink.
When we used Vector, we lost some sections.
Plotting using Raster, fixed it. As long as we remember to plot those sheets separately.
Sent it off to Support. They said this is a known issue and they are "working on a fix".

Hi Mike - Long time no see! :)
It's a factoid of Revit that transparent elements are not clear in 2D elevations (think:glass). You could orient a 3D View, and composite with a 2D view containing on levels and grids.
All the best -
