Does REVIT save back-up files? If not, how can you backup your local files? I had a problem with deleting something by accident and then inadvertently sychronized. Is there any way of getting back that information from an older local file?

We have a daily backup that, if need be, I can access and overwrite the original central file but that would get rid of anything that was done by everyone in the office.

Thanks Peter.

I would try to find an older local file that still contains the info you need. Open that local file "Detached from Central". Copy the items you need and paste back into current project. I know there's several other ways to do this, but can't remember what the file types are. You can "roll back" a project with journal file. I'm thinking that revit makes a back-up but I'm not sure how far back it may go.
Hope this helps.

2nd Icon from Right.....

You can save a previous version so that you can copy and paste back into your current model...

When you select the backup folder....just remember you select the Central file backup, not your local file backup.

Depending on who setup your central file..you may have quite a bit of backups or very few..

That is great, thanks.

Now the only issue is actually making the backups. I guess REVIT doesn't automatically make these backups? I have a "backup" folder for each of my projects on my local drive under my documents but there are only files with extensions of RWS and DAT. I can't seem to use these for anything?

Am I missing something? If I have to consciously make a copy before I think I may need it, it kind of defeats the purpose. Thanks

Peter.

As Mike said, You'll want to look at the central file location, Not the local.

I looked in the central file location and there is a backup folder with just RWS and DAT files, and a couple of different files with extension SLOG and SLOGBAK??

How would I use these to get my file back?

Thanks.

You do this from within Revit:

Have everyone else stop working on the project
Click Restore Backup (Collaborate ribbon)
Browse to and select the backup folder for the project file
Click Open

Revit reads the data stored in this folder to provide a list of previous saved backup states to restore from

Choose a date that makes sense.
Click Save As
Provide a new file name
Click Save
You'll be given the option to open the file

Regardless when you open the file it will be a "local file" that would like to sync with the original, you need to make it a new central file.

Use Save As > Project to create a new project file
Provide a new name
Click Options
Check the option: Make this a Central File after save
Click OK
Click Save

You now have a new central file based on an earlier version. You are working in the new central file.

Sync with Central and relinquish elements
Close the file
Have other team members recreate their local files from the new central file

You select just the folder only....not a file under the folder...all those files are your backups...

Then follow what Steve said...
