2d to 3d grid issue

I having issues getting some 2d grids back to 3d.
I've tried right clicking the datum and Reset to 3D Extents, but it is greyed out.
I've also tried dragging the filled circle back to the open circle, but no luck.

anything else to try?

finding a 3d grid and propagating extents seemed to work sporadically.

I also found that dragging the open circle to the filled circle worked to switch the grid back to 3d....which is kind of a nuisance.

Your datum must be at the exterior of a Crop Region if it's greyed out.
