merging / copying elements

I have a drawing where i deleted a building pad by accident and would like to retrieve this pad from a backup file. Revit won't let me copy and paste it. Is there any way to merge this one element or to copy this as a group or family and load it into my current drawing? I've tryed grouping a few elements that i will need and tryed to save the group, but Revit won't let me do this either. Any ideas how I can get this to work?

You won't be able to copy the pad but you should be able to copy the sketch.

Open the old file, get into sketch mode on the pad and select the linework, copy it to the clipboard.
Go to the new file, create a new pad and then paste the linework from the clipboard.
