How to have different materials between the same group

I've got a stair tower that is a group because it occurs twice in the same building. But I want the 2 instances of this group to have different materials. Is it possible to keep them groups, but only change wall materials?

No, that would defeat the purpose of groups.

Too bad. It would make groups more powerful. Revit already allows you to modify invididual instances of a group while maintaining the core similarities. (ie. excluding items, stretching walls, etc.) I hoped altering materials would be similar.
