View Full Version : Objects locked by another user?
I'm trying to figure out how to use Map. I did something wrong, and got everything all screwed up. So, I tried starting fresh. The only thing I'm still using is my source drawing. I tried creating a brand new Map session, attaching my source drawing, and redoing things, except now I get "Cannot add object to save set; Object is locked by another Map user" every time I try to do anything but query.
I may have to forget about the Map thing for a while. The boss has seen me spend most of today trying to figure out Map with no apparent results, so he wants me to manually calc all the lot closures and label areas on a 260-lot subdivision using LDD parcels. I know how much longer and error-prone that is, so I'd really like to get this working via Map, but the boss wants results yesterday... (He thinks I should have all my lots labeled by now. Of course, he can't even open an Autocad drawing, so he doesn't really understand what I'm up against, trying to learn Map in a day...)

I think this problem can be solved by closing MAP
and deleting the DWK and DWL file in the folder with your source file.
IT could also be a result of some of your workstation
specific settings in the MAP Options Dialog.

When you closed down the map session, did you detach the drawing before you exited? If not, you should be able to find a dwk file of the same name as the drawing. You can safely delete this file as long as there is no-one in either of the files and you will be able to work with the file(s) normally.
Remeber to detach your drawings before exiting a session or you will have the DWK file that will block others ( and yourself) from using that file until you do.

Are you sure about this. I close sessions all the time with out detaching any drawings, and never have this problem. The only time I have this problem is if MAP crashes.

It depends on the settings in Map. On the Project Tab, if, in the "Activate attached source drawings" section, the "From Last Session at startup" is checked. If someone else opens the drawing and doesn't have Map workspace open, they don't know that the file is attached and you get the dwk file.

If none of those work, you should also try Map Menu>> Drawings>> Drawing Maintenance. Click the User List button and see if any object locks come up, if they do, click Select All and then Remove Locks. If you have an Unknown user in the list, you will need to log in as a super user to remove the locks. To do that go to Map>> Utilities>> User Login...
Login: SUPERUSER
Password: SUPERUSER
Then go back to Drawing Maintenance again.
Hope this helps,
Jeremiah
I was able to delete the locks by logging in as SUPERUSER. Thanks.

Ha! I'm glad I found this thread. I'm working on minute planning (with C3D pack). Normaly I do my job with classic AutoCAD tools and some of C3D, but with current project I decided to take a chance with MAP3D. I don't know how well I did with MAP3D, but I found that it doesn't suit my needs (in Legend I couldn't get it to show symbols of lines at the center of descriptive text). When I tried to edit some files which were attached to experimental MAP file, I got message that file is locked by MAP3D. Deleting DWK files made those files going again.... whooo

Great post! For the life of me I couldn't figure out why a CAD file was locked without having a .dwk file. Apparently there are a few places a file can be locked.
What worked for me:
Map>Utilities>User Login
Login: SUPERUSER
pass: SUPERUSER
Map>Drawings>Drawing Maintenace
Select the attached drawing and Remove Locks.
Thanks again.
