View Full Version : Transparent Material in Elevation 2

I created a screen wall that I am using for a screened in porch. When I view the elevations I can not see through the screen wall. I can see through it when looking at the 3D model. I did some research and I am trying the idea I found in the following post to create my solution. http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=28822
It mentioned creating an elevation using the 3D view which I have successfully done. Now for my follow up the the issue. How do I annotate (dim, tag, and show floor elevations) the 3D view and is it possible to cut the grading so I see earth below grade and not the bottom of my model?
I think this is creating a can of worms that I didn't want to open. One thought I have, is it possible to create my true elevation then annotate it and then either hide or mask the model parts. Then show my 3D view (elevation) below the annotations from my true elevation on the Sheet layout? So I would be using the 3D for the drawing and the true elevation for the annotations?

Hi. You can dimension in a 3D view, but you have to set the workplane to be parallel to the view. Go to the Home Tab>Workplane panel and choose "Set" to align the workplane to the view. You will then be able to dimension in the view as well as add notes, etc. Tagging is another matter however. Have you tried making the screen using a different object? For instance with curtain walls, you can make the panel "Empty" and you will be able to then see through it.
I hope this helps!

I think you are on the right track here Stephen.
Create your 3D view and make sure it is at the same scale as your elevation. Hide everything in the view except your screen walls. Orient the 3D view (using the view cube) to your elevation view.
In your 2D elevation view hide all the screen walls, best to use a filter for this.
Place your 2D elevation view on the sheet first then the 3D view. they should snap into alignment on the sheet.
The only real drawback to this method is the way Revit will 'mask' the foreground if the lines are of different colors or half toned. The good news is that only happens with model objects not annotations.

Thanks for the good ideas, I will try both and see which one I like better.

We use a screen wall for exactly this purpose, and simply go to elevation view select screen wall and simply override it to be transparent. hatch patterns still show but you can see through it. I think we even halftone it for a nice look instead of nearly a black blob.
Gets a bit tricky if you have a screen wall behind the screen wall and stuff in between you want to see IIRC.

override it to be transparent. hatch patterns still show but you can see through it..
I thought you could do that. So I tested it to confirm, and it didn't work, hence my response. You suggest it, so I tried it again and it does work... if you zoom in so the surface pattern appears in the view:Oops:
This is obviously the easier approach.

I just played with my screen wall and its visibility. I was checking all the settings and the pattern wasn't showing up in elevation after I set the wall to transparent. I was using a modified houndstooth pattern and called it screen. I had scaled it to .25. It looks like the pattern scale was too tight, after overriding the pattern in the elevation to be the default houndstooth the pattern printed on my sheet. Thanks for the help.

I [U] if you zoom in so the surface pattern appears in the view:Oops:
It happens on most all machines i tried that a while ago. It's funny how the scale would affect it.
It will print right though
