Cant you just add it to the fonts folder.
C:\program files\autodesk\autocad mep 2011\fonts
location something like that.

SHX fonts = add to your fonts directory (which will be part of your support file search path)
Truetype fonts = install as a Windows font (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314960), restart AutoCAD.

However, if the font file is an old style Postscipt font (.pfb) It's no longer supported by autodesk.
And, if it's using current OpenType font technology, (.otf of .off) it is not yet supported by autodesk. Thatt's only been around since 2005 after all, ;)
btw -- it's worth noting that OpenType fonts can and do use the .ttf extension, so if you have a fontname.ttf that shows up in typical Windows applications, but is_not_ available in autodesk CAD applications, that could be the reason.
Only older style TTF or Autodesk's own .SHX fonts can be used in their CAD products
