Hello
Can I import or open a Revit model directly using Autocad, Navisworks, and 3D Max? If not what steps do I need to take?

Not directly. Revit Files are RVT extensions. AutoCAD, Navisworks, and Max don't read RVT files natively. You will need to convert Revit files to DWG to be compatible in all three. Although you could make a DWG for AutoCAD, an NWC file for Navisworks, and an FBX file for Max.

Do you know if Autodesk are looking at this option for any of these applications for the graphics only? I understand the information component might be a challenging task.

I was under the impression that the flagship version of Navisworks has the capability to directly import .rvt files..

I'd heard that, too. ~google~

You can now merge RVT files directly from Navisworks without pre-exporting an NWC file from within Revit. This will probably be a true delight for builders who may no longer need an installation of Revit just to get the model data into Navisworks. Model components from a Revit model are now organized in the Selection Tree according to category, family, type, and instance.
CAVEAT: This functionality will open the RVT file and will look for a 3D view for which the name contains “Navis.” If one is found, it will load the data that is visible in that view.

Well, you have to examine the date at which this thread was originally answered (I believe about a week before Navisworks 2013 was released). With this latest release, direct opening of Revit files is finally available. To expand on that, 3DS Max 2013 can bring Revit files directly in as well.
