Nested Door Panel

I am making nested door panel families. Because they are nested I want to make the parameters by instance instead of by type, and link them to parameters in the door family. I started with the Generic Model family and changed the category to Door. Doing this brought in the parameters Thickness, Rough Width, Rough Height, Width, and Height. I don't see any way to edit these parameters. Should I ignore them and create my own?

I just use Height,Width and Thickness for my panels....and link them in the door family. The rough openings have no value as there is nothing for it to cut into, the frame family does that.

Oh, they do have to be type parameters in the panel family....if you want them to be instance, you need to make them instance in door family the panel is nested into...

Just so I have it right - a type parameter in the panel family can be linked to an instance parameter in the door family? I thought it was the other way around.
