Please keep in mind I'm very new to this and still trying to understand everything. I know some stuff, but I have a lot to learn. Anyway, I'm trying to learn Roof Soffits. It's kind of a confusing tool. How come it makes me select a level instead of simply attaching it to the roof? In other words, I'm trying to add a soffit to my roof, so I go to my top plate level, select the roof and the walls (so that it doesn't go through the walls) and it puts the soffit on the level of the top plate instead of knowing that it goes all the way down to the edge of the roof. Since there's an overhang, the edge of the roof goes below the top plate level. I could give it a "height offset" of the approximate height of the edge of the roof or create a new level of an that approximate height, but it seems like there should be an easier way? Is there?

No, you're doing it correctly. After placing the soffit, create/open a wall section and move the soffit to the correct height.

I suppose that you could set up a soffit level and use it for placing the soffit.

Hmmm, strange. Ok, thanks! Glad to know I was doing it right.

I guess another question I have is: Is there a way to cut the rafter to that it "sits" on the top plate? Right now, I have them unconnected because if I connect them, Revit cuts the top plate and it keeps the rafter as is instead of keeping the top plate as is and notching out the rafter so that it will sit on it.

Keep in mind that the soffit tool isn't all that different than the ceiling or the floor tool. So I think that is why you set it to a level, and then as AL pointed out move it to the desired height. And, depending on how the roof is created and whether the fascia has a reveal below the soffit or not... there are many reasons for this simple level of adjustment to be made.
