I'm trying to make an in-place sweep but I'm not 100% sure on the profile yet. In older versions of Revit, I used to be able to draw the profile as a family, then import that into the in-place mass so if I wanted to change the shape of the profile, I could just do it in the profile family and it would update.

Now (Revit 2011) it seems like I can only use a profile I draw in the in-place mass mode. The problem with that is that I have several instances of this profile (different sweeps) so I'd really like to not have to re-draw the profile in every instance.

How can I import a profile into the in-place sweep?

You can't. The new massing tools represent a fundamental break from the profile/path based modelling in previous versions. The only way to get the functionality back is to load+convert a pre-2010 project file with an in-place mass in it and copy'n'paste it into your 2011 project.

That sucks! Why did they make the new massing tool so stupid!?

Revit, you have failed me

While massing doesn't allow for profile swapping, regular in-place families still do allow for profile swapping, just fyi.

Unfortunately, that doesn't do me any good. I need to draw the path of the sweep in the project (it's the building perimeter). Thanks for the help!

It works in 2011 as usual

Gerhard,
How did you get to that screen?

Component / Model in Place / (Home) Sweep / Sketch Path (actually doing it) Profile (chose from Profiles)

Ooh! I didn't know you could make sweeps that way! That's just what I was looking for. Thanks Gerhard!
