importing patterns issue

I have tried several different times to import a pat file for other hatch patterns into Revit and they either: too large, x in preview box, or solid black in preview box. I can't seem to figure out how to scale. The scale feature is not available to select. What am I doing wrong? I just can't seem to understand the other posts on this subject or maybe I am just missing something.

scaling can only be done when you first import the pattern. Click on the name of the pattern in the box and you should be able to type in a scale.
