I've done something and can't figure what I've done, in my AutoCad 2011 Mechanical. When I click the icon in my layering toolbar to add, change a linetype, etc., I get prompted at the Commandline for Layer\Object keys. The Layer Manager Icon has has the layered sheets/pages/whatever they are, but instead of the light blue shaded backwards "L" in the lower right corner, I've got a dark blue Gear in that corner.
I like using the Clasic setup's (been a user since Release 10 in DOS) Workspace, but this has me baffled!
Now I've shut down and rebooted, tried to create even a new toolbar with the proper icon and get the same thing, being prompted at the Commandline. I've brought up the Layer Properties Manager Pallette which now sits to the right of my drawing window, which really bites,...... because now if I go to far to the rightthis huge Layer Properties Manager Pallette window opens and if I go to far to the left the Propeties Pallette. I just want to use my Layer Properties Manager Pulldown, Like the old days. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

What happens when you type in ._layer (including the . and the _ ) ?

When I type "._layer" the "layer properties manager" palette comes up. That's what I had mentioned. I've got the "Propeties Manager" Palette on one side of my screen and the "Layer Prop. Manager" on the other. When I go to far, with my cursor either way on my screen, a pallette maximizes. I can operate like this but I just want to be able to use my toolbar icon and cannot.

Are you saying that you want the modal dialog for layer properties? (The one with the OK and Cancel buttons - that goes away until you call it again...?)

If so, type in LAYERDLGMODE and set it to 0

OK, THAT'S SOMETHING I'VE NEVER DONE BEFORE. UNLESS YOU'RE JUST TALKING ABOUT TAKING A PICTURE OF MY COMPUTER SCREEN, I'VE NEVER DONE ANY KIND OF A SCREEN CAPTURE. OR ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE?. BUT! ALAS, I'M AT WORK.

Assuming you are on a PC with Windows, press the PRINT SCREEN button to take a snapshot of the entire screen -or- press ALT+PRINT SCREEN to take a snapshot of just the current window.

Then open a graphics program (Windows Paint will do) and use the Paste command to paste in the image. Save it as a JPG or PNG file and then attach to your next message here.

What happens when you try the ._CLASSICLAYER command?

Note - It (the Layer Properties Manager) should have appeared this way with LayerDlgMode = 0.

I GET THE LAYER PROPERTIES MANAGER BOX I WANT, BUT I WANT TO GET IT TO COME DOWN WHEN I CLICK MY TOOLBAR ICON.
IS THERE SOME KIND OF LOCK OR TOGGLE, I'VE GOT SET, IN LAYER PROP MANAGER OR MY OPTIONS?

I don't know, what does your toolbar button's macro look like...? (post the code)

Also, please stop posting with ALL CAPS. It's not that hard to turn ON/off when switching from ACAD to a Forum post.

If LAYERDLGMODE = 0, then the ._Layer command will call the modal (ClassicLayer) command and you will get the desired result.

Maybe the toolbar button is resetting this variable before calling the layer command? Check the macro in the CUI. OR maybe there is a way to open the palette even if LAYERDLGMODE = 0 and it's doing this..?

Well I think I half arst figured it out. It was an Acad Mechcanical Menu. Of course I'm not sure if that menu is supposed to act that way, which to me, bites, but it does! I did some monkeying around this morning and was messing with the Workspace and while I don't like the Ribbon and it works great for Word, PowerPoint and alike. Autocad for me not so much.
Anyway I just changed the menus and then changed it back and then changed the workspace and manipulated the toolbars, by turning the tolbar off and right clicking in the empty space then checking the LAYERS toolbar. Wha-La, what I want!
Thank you all so much, Greg

Thanks Renderman, Sometimes in the heat of work and typing I'm not always looking at the screen. By the time i was almost finished I realized the CAPS were on. But, I didn't realize that there were was policing of the site. My humblist apologizes if I offended anyone but thy.

Don't be weird; there's no 'policing of the site' that I know of... unless a moderator deems it necessary.

While your public, humble apologies are appreciated, they're unnecessary. My comments weren't personal; it's just a simple matter of Forum Etiquette (http://forums.augi.com/faq.php?faq=vb_augi#faq_vb_augi_etiquette) :

Please do not post thread titles and thread posts using only UPPER case letters. The use of all UPPER case letters in the virtual world is considered rude and a sign of shouting.

I'm glad you've resolved your issue.

Cheers!
