Keynote vs. Omniclass

I've been trying to move our organization to using keynotes instead of simply text-labeling components on each drawing. I love the keynoting concept, but hardly any families come with keynotes defined. I started assigning values but it seems like there are many gaps in the keynote text file.

Now I've noticed the Omniclass properties. It looks like everything already has an omniclass number and description.

1. Is there a way to just use omniclass numbers instead of keynote values and get something that works the way a keynote legend does?

2. Or, is there a way to set families so keynote value always equals omniclass value?

3. Am I completely off track here? Is it common for companies to spend hours filling in missing keynotes and descriptions?

They are very different things!
First, you must understand the hierarchy of families:

Family
Family Type (or symbol)
Family instance.

The revit omnicalss parameter goes to the family level while keynote is of level type.
That means that all types in the same family share the omniclass parameter.
That rules the logic of organizing falimilies by those classifications.
...if you play by the rules!
