Oh man....strike up another mark for ArchiCAD (http://www.graphisoft.com/products/archicad/faq.html#whatsnew) when it comes to work/team sharing for the model... I'll probably get 14 when it comes out in a couple of months....unfortunately I haven't done any work in ArchiCAD since release 11...so I'll probably be totally lost again.

"What is Teamwork "Pack & Go"?

Take Teamwork projects anywhere, saving all necessary files and libraries of Teamwork sessions into a transportable data package for further edits without the need for physical access to the BIM Server from any remote computer. All you need is a pen drive: create a "Travel Pack" out of your local copy of the Teamwork project and/or libraries. Once you get to the remote computer, just plug it in and continue your work – no need to access the BIM Server or download large data packages. Optionally, if you do have access to the BIM Server, you can send in your changes from the remote machine, too."

I should add......would one want this in Revit? I can see using it on some projects if I wanted to work from home and not worry about the VPN or Remote Workplace...

Sounds to me like a return to the 'workset per user' scenarios of old - where the workset division ensures no 'overlap/override' between users. And I'd need to see how much off-site change could be handled before an incompatibility issue. And then you'd have to combat users' tendency to hoard changes and not release back, and then you'd have to hunt down the pen drive of the checked out worksets...

In short, could be a nice tool for disciplined users, but a headache for teams of novice and/or 'distracted' users - of which a general large office is chock full of!

For Revit, my process to transport a project for home or ftp is to detach from central, then resave as central to a temporary folder, making sure to relinquish all. For projects with a lot of linked Revit projects it would be nice if there were a way to batch and automate this process. It sure would make it a lot easier to provide updates to the ftp site.

A travel pack simply lets you copy the Archicad file and any central libraries to a usb stick (or whatever) so you can copy them to your machine at home.

Once opened you can connect back to the server and update the model – only the changes are synced, avoiding the need to copy the files (which can get pretty large) over the internet. We have done it a few times when remote workers come into the office, it's really pretty straightforward.

Once it's done you can still see what other users are working on and release anything you've reserved if someone else needs it, just like working in the office.

Sounds good if only one user will take out the file.

What if User2 will also take the same file with the User1 knowledge. How will User1 knows that his work will not overlap with User2 or vice versa?

And what if another User3 decided to take out the file also. Not knowing User1 and User2 already took the file.
(But I believed there should be a notice window informing the user who took the file).

I just wonder, how the program can merge all the changes done by user 1, 2 and 3?

@Jun: The Travel Pack only works with Teamwork files – files which have been shared on the BIM server, which takes care of this problem.

Effectively, any models which are going to be worked on by more than one person is shared and is accessible by any user. Some sole practitioners do this as well as it gives more flexibility and creates backups etc.

Anyone can reserve part of the model they want to work on, or layer settings, camera views etc. You can display the colour of elements to show their owner (User1 in blue, User2 in green…), if you want to get an overview of who is working on what bits.

If others need to work on your elements they request access to them. A dialogue appears on your screen if your are in Archicad or next time you launch it (a potential weakness if a remote party is not on-line much).

The element then gets transferred to the other party who can do what they want to it. Ownership is updated on everyone's system so you know who has it.

Apologies if some of this is available in Revit (I think it is) and I'm not using the right terminology to explain it better. I'm an Archicad user who is looking for help exchanging IFC files with Revit… just thought I would join this conversation while browsing :-)

Archicad 15 is due in a couple of months, 14 has been out since June last year. Nothing much has changed since 11 except for the Teamwork 2

Yeah, I realized that when I got home and I had it installed already....

When you never use the program one tends to forget what version you have installed....
