Hi everyone!! New guy here to the forum..
im using 2012 structural revit and having some issues with viewing my components in my 3D view. I think my components are in 2D, im able to view them in sections or detail view but not 3D, whys that? i have checked my VV in 3D and still no way to see my components.
If i need my components in 3D how do i go about creating them? i have spent over 2 hours trying to figure out the difference between them, how to create one and no luck...

All items in the Detail Component folder are 2D objects. These can be used in drafting views and sections.
will not show in 3d views. In the Structural folder you will find a Connections folder, the objects in this folder are 3d, and will show in 3D views if turned-on in VG. You can download some 3D objects from the web, some suppliers are offering 3D objects of there products.
You can make your own 3D objects families, start with one of the Generic Model templates.
Or you can model-in-place if you want to make 3D object.

In addition to what dmahan said, if you need a help line in 3D, use the "Model line".

should be a ton of 2d and3d components installed with RS2012. if you are in a floor plan view you can place columns, beams, joists, trusses, etc.Drafting views are for the 2d stuff, mainly detail components and drafting lines, allthough those can exist in other views as well. the 2d stuff wont be seen in 3d views. there may be a visibility issue where your objects are not visible in coarse medium or fine. or you may have them on a workset thats turned off. there are all kinds of options for decreasing/increasing your visibility of items. check in the views properties that its set to structural, that your view range/section box encompasses those items as well.

im actually looking for 3D anchor bolts, steel plates and just structural detailing. i understand that it comes with 3D objects already but i need more of the detailing for presentations in 3D. where is this 3D LIB located? i have tried looking for it but couldn't find it.

from home tab, pick place a component, then load family, find Structural Folder, sub-folders Connection then Steel you will find 3D objects. Also in the Structural Folder is the Stiffeners sub-folders these are 3D objects. I would not call this a complete library of what you may need, but this should get you started.
You will need to duplicate and save type to new name and change parameters for your needs.
Place 3D objects in your model by plane or face of existing opbject. If your base plate is upside down, you can flip it into correct position with anchor bolts going down. If you do not have your work plane set to bottom of the column when to place the base plate.

The Content structure can appear quite daunting when you first open the box
HERE is a link https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B9C7NrW20L4yMTEyNGNkNWMtNmM3NC00YmQxLWJkNTMtYjljZDkyNTIxNGJm&hl=en_GB&authkey=CO_OiOoB
to download the 7 page review of the Revit Structural Suite 2012 Out of the Box UK (formally Metric) Library Reference Guide with Files.
The seven page document covers what's new and what's missing since last year, but I can't give you any information about what might have been corrected or modified since last year, only Autodesk could and should do this.
I have not produced this for any other version or country, again IMHO Autodesk should do that

Thanks Alan. That's great.
Why the hell did they removed the European steel profile?
Are they trying to leave the European market?

The Revit 2012 install for the US market got your metric shapes, and we did not ask for them...?
