Is it posible to set the default of a hatch grip to add vertex instead of stretch.
I generally hatch areas by starting a small area and expanding the hatch to suit, this is time consuming when i have to wait for edit list each time i select an intermediate grip

I'm confused, why not hatch the area you want the first time? If you expand the Dialog Box by picking the Rt Button at the lower right then you can creat a new Boundary Set to use with Pick points. You could also use Layer Isolate before using hatch.

A lot of the hatches I create use a XREF as a boundary, I have always had issues with this freezing / crashing my computer (although I have recently upgraded to a Whizz bang flash new machine, maybe I will try it)
plus this way I know I will only hatch the areas I want and not hatch areas I don't want, not miss or include and Islands I don't / do want and it will only be 1 hatch entity.

Easily taken care of by creating a boundary set.

and it will only be 1 hatch entity.
Using the Hatch editor and adding pick points still results in 1 hatch entity. I've never found a need to grip edit a hatch and prefer associated ones anyway.

Thanks for the input Tom, but you haven't answered the question.
When you say a boundary set, do you mean drawing a polyline around the area requiring hatching or selecting objects to use as a boundary? if the later, I may have numerous criss-crossing lines, polylines, arcs, etc. and selecting one will create the correct boundary in one part of the drawing, but create am unwanted island in another, I have just found it more accurate to expand the hatch than select boundaries and then check for deleted islands.
I am creating the hatch where I want it, not where ACAD thinks I want it.

Sounds like you are familar with selecting geometry for a Boundary Set, have you tried double-clicking the hatch and using the editor? You can add as many pick points as you like. I just don't understand why you want to grip edit when the Hatch Editor is so much easier and produces the same result?

I don't use it every time, but I do a lot, its just what i find easiest in some circumstances

Despite the fantastic discourse here has anyone got an answer to the original question:

Is it posible to set the default of a hatch grip to add vertex instead of stretch?

When you select the hatch pattern you get a grip either end of a line and a smaller rectangular one in the middle. The grip in the middle will add a vertex.

Not that I have seen, or am aware.
