View Full Version : Wall Patterns and Architectual Columns

Ok i have a simple question... I think.
Adjusting surface patterns such as brick is done really easy in elevations. I can use align, move etc. However when I place an architectural column in a wall to create a pilaster, it works well for plans and massings. However, the surface pattern seen in elevation is unable to be adjusted. The walls patterns on the base wall can still be adjusted but pattern that has wrapped the architectual column can't?
Is there a work around? Or am i missing something?

Even though architectural columns automatically join with the walls when placed, you might want to try creating a more explicit connection by using the join geometry tool.

Not sure what you mean by this.
I use architectural columns which are placed in a wall and they automatically join to it, you are correct there. I then tried to "join geometry" of the columns to the wall. (thats what i thought your recomendation was) Unfortunately that won't work, because the walls that contained the columns could not be selected after the column was.
Thanks for the idea though!

I just verified that the alignment behavior works in 7.0. See attached image. Left column in each wall segment was placed away from the wall then aligned to the face then joined with the join geometry command. Right column in each wall segment was placed so that it extend into wall surface and was joined automatically by the program. I created a detail line in elevation and used it to align the brick pattern on the wall. The brick pattern on the columns aligned automatically with the wall pattern.
Some other things to consider. Perhaps it is an upgrade issue. Was this created in 6.1 then upgraded to 7.0? Are the columns in the same phase as the wall? Is it definitely an architectural column?

The reason for join geometry tool not allowing you to select the wall and column is that they are already joined (automatically as mentioned above.)
Try to unjoin them and join manually again. You should see identical shapes as after the automatic join.

Another issue I have found after the architectural columns are joined to walls is that you loose the ability to use the align tool for the centre of the column. Is there a way to force the align tool to 'grab' the centre of the column after it has been joined to the wall.
I find that even if you pull the column off the wall (it still has the adopted material of the wall) it still won't allow a align to the centre of the column.
Any ideas??
