I know you can upload an image to use for a rendering appearance and I am told that to do this you go to Options>Rendering>Add path, then click on the (...) and find/select/open your image.

However, when I do this and I get to the step where you click on the (...) to find your image, none of my images are even showing up in my folder to be able to select and open. I know that they are in the right location and they are jpg images so this shouldn't be an issue.

Am I doing something wrong or missing a step? Or is there a different way to upload images to use for rending?

You actually add images etc through the materials dialog screen

Could you tell me how to do this? I'm working with revit 2011. I'm a novice and I've spent hours trying to figure this out... for some reason I keep hitting dead ends.

thanks!

best bet is to whack this into the help search after you press F1 for help.

Changing the Render Appearance of a Material

I could fill up paragraphs of explanation, but you will get your fastest answer by pressing F1 (help).

A really good thing to do us adding this link to your internet browser.
file:///C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Revit Architecture 2011/Program/Help/en-US/WBH/landing.html

Well, that is the default installation folder for the help file, might be different in your case. But you get the idea, you can access help via your help browser anytime you want. I often just have a read of it. There is also a way to change your .ini file so when you press F1 it does not go to the internet first, it will go to your local help.
I'm sure its posted some where on these forums.
here's a link to look at.
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=14994272&linkID=9243099

If you are just beginning, I guarantee you will spend many many hours going to help to find a solution for something. 90% of the time, it is faster that whacking questions up on forums.

cheers, and good luck
