I AM AN ARCHITECT NEW TO THE REVIT WORLD - DOING A SMALL BUILDING AND USING MEP FOR THE RISERS, LIGHTING, ETC. IS IT BETTER TO WORK ON ONE FILE, OPENING IT IN REVIT MEP OR STRUCTURE, OR ARCHITECTURE, as opposed to using the collaboration functions?

If you have access to both packages and the size of the project is suitable then by all means keep all discipline in the same model. It will save you coordination issues with regard to hosted elements and other hassles associated with linked files.
