View Full Version : Beams in Residential Wood Frame

Hi everyone.

I'm a middle of the road Revit User.

My projects are generally residential wood frame.

I've delivered one project where I modelled it for the elevations and then drew 2d in some sections and some in plan to finish it. It was a 500 SF addition. Waste of time to do in Revit. I spent the majority of the time modelling the existing conditions.

I'm doing another and I'd actually like to have the beams and structure in there. Nobody will ever import it into Revit Structure, but I suppose learning the best practices for later is prudent.

So far, I've created some trusses which use the Generic Complex Structural family.

My real question right now is about beams.
I've set my walls to bearing. The beams are on the level they're supporting. They seem to connect nicely with the wall.

Right now they're cutting back the beam to the face of the wall. The blue dot is in the wall, and it automatically sets the arrows (offset?) to the face of the wall. One end is on ICF, and the other is in wood frame, but will be on a 4x4 tube. I've broken one of the rules since the column isn't in there yet. Regardless, I'd like the beam to extend into the wall, since it seems that is how it would be built in residential. How do I make it do that? Just edit the offsets to zero? If I do that, how do I get it show the correct length including bearing? The join with the wall is crazy as wall joins seem to be. Same for beams.

Further more, I'm following the method of underlaying and RCP then using LW on the beams. I seem to get the whole beam showing, instead of just a centerline. Is there a way to get just a centerline?

Is it possible to have it cut a pocket on the ICF end?

Thanks in advance for any leads.
