I don't think I'm missing anything, but would appreciate independent corroboration.
So, the owner gave me a revit file for an existing building. It has phases in it, for the original construction and also for some renovation. I have no work in the linked building, so I don't have any reason to change the file, I want to just link it as it is, into my project for a new building adjacent to it.
The phase mapping does not allow me to get the last phase in the linked project file to show only as a previous phase in my project. The dialog forces me to set the "Phase from linked file" to a phase that exists in the link; I can't set it to none or leave it blank. So I'm forced to map the last phase from the link to my new phase, and that makes the renovation phase in the link look like new work that is part of my project. The earlier work in the link does correctly show as existing. The only way to get the actual last-used phase of the work in the link to show up only as a previous phase in mine is to edit the linked file to add a future phase, that has nothing in it, so that the nothing-in-it phase is there for me to map to my newest phase.
I think Revit needs to allow 'None' mapping of phases in the links, so that linked files don't have to be changed to add phases.
