This is just a generic problem. I'm sitting on the other side so I really don't have the details, just what the guy told me...

-The problem...
I've had an Arch tell me that they had problems linking in my nonworksharing file into their worksharing file in Revit 2011. The way that they seemed to solve it was to open my nonworksharing file and make it a worksharing file and then they were able to pull it in with no problems.

-My thoughts...
What the Arch doesn't make sense to me on a few different levels... One I don't think the guy I'm interfacing with knows allot about Revit. I'll say I'm in the same boat there. I mean I get Revit now but I don't think I consider myself a master if you will. I mean have you seen some of the things they created on the internet...... Maybe we all are in the same boat, but I have the feeling he has even less knowledge than I do...

Also, it is just a link... I mean I can link in his worksharing file into my non-worksharing file so why not the other way... One day when I have a little more time I'll fiddle around with it myself

-the question???
Has anyone else had that problem?

The only "problem" I can think of that one might encounter when linking a non-workshared file into a file that has worksharing enabled would be that the architect in your case could not selectively close worksets in the linked file to help improve performance. Would I actually consider that a problem, no, its a workflow issue and the arch should be communicating with their consultants and the team should be working together to assure effective workflow.

They probably just needed to rename the file to get the pathing squared away....maybe you had a link to something and your file was trying to find it?

I think it is safe to assume that this Arch is one in the other category... Work planes are pixy dust??? And they are the 'boss' of the project so....

On the linking thing, All my Revit links are overlays so that shouldn't be a problem. I do have allot of CAD detail links, but from what I've seen on my side that shouldn't be a problem...

I always open up a consultants drawing, remove all links, then name it as something else anyway....sometimes Revit likes to keep track of those links, even if set to overlay.

I link non-shared Site files into workshared Building files all the time. I've never had any problems doing it that I recall. I often also link consultants' non-shared files into my workshared Architectural files all the time.

I also keep links set to Overlay. When I link in consultants' links that already have my file linked in, it tells me that my link won't display in their file but I don't need to see it obviously.

I typically keep my consultants' files names the same because I have a script that runs every night that automatically copies our file and consultants' files back and forth from our FTP to our server.
