I'm looking for a good reference. There are a lot of books out there, but nothing is really catching my eye. They are all very thick and hard to get a sense of by flipping through. They are also expensive, and I'd hate to spend a lot of money on a dud.
I'm using Revit 2012, but I'm sure that good books that were written for previous versions would be helpful (and cheaper).
Any input is welcome!

I recommend Paul Aubin's materials. They have proven their value over the years.

I have also heard great things about the Mastering series by James, Eddy and Phil:

Personally, I prefer the "Mastering" books by Eddy, Phil, and James. I teach Revit Architecture to college students and switched to this book as my textbook last year. The students really liked it and it goes way beyond the material they required. That's one of the things I really appreciated about it. So, I recommend that my students keep it as a professional reference. This is my opinion only, ymmv.

I vote for Mastering also. Not because I know James and Phil, but because, as a long time Revit user (Revit 6.0), I want a book where I can jump into any topic and get what I need without reading the whole chapter and maybe the previous chapter too.
Some of the books require that you read them in sequence and slowly build your understanding. That's OK in a classroom where you have a whole semester and no real project, but out on the battlefield, I need quick answers.
The 2012 version is ready. I don't know if it's on sale though. James brought his copy to the User Group meeting a couple weeks ago.
Watch out for the binding. Mine broke into two. I now have Mastering I and Mastering II. Just like Julia Child.
Bon appetit!
