I am revising some of our standards as I built our 2012 template file and I would like to prefix existing column grids with an EX. I created and loaded the new grid bubble and applied it to a new grid type. However, when testing, I cannot have a grid bubble with EX1 and another with 1. For some reason, Revit does not pick up on the label prefix of the family as part of the grid name. Is this correct or did I miss something in the process?

That's right, it will not read this so why do it? Simply name your grids EX1...2...3 etc. and don't create a special family.

Same here, we typically just do x1, x2, x3, or xA, xB, xC, and so on for existing structural grids. No special family required.

We use a different family, but that's because we use a different symbol for an existing grid head. We also screen the existing grids and lines. This really helps a ton in figuring out if it's supposed to relate back to an existing grid or a new one.
