View Full Version : Too many sub regions on toposurface?

We have a toposurface with a lot of complex (spline based) sub regions on it (blame the landscape architect). We ran into a problem where the file would freeze when trying to sync with central.
With that failing I created a new local and attempted to copy the offending toposurface from the old file into the new file and once again the program froze.
Has anyone had issues with this? Any suggestions? I've tried splitting the topo into smaller topos but it freezes whenever it has to regen the surface now.

I've seen this and suspect it is a memory issue--not enough RAM.
Try creating multiple surfaces instead of one very large one.
Then place the subregions in the smaller toposurfaces, and try using Join Geometry to join the toposurfaces.

I have tried unsuccessfully to do a 100+ Subregion Topo for a Project
After Crashing every Hour I Just Gave Up - I would never do it that way again
Made an Overall Topo, then just Split the Thing up into Tiny Pieces, then merged them back in
Some instances we used Floors instead of Sub Regions etc - Just heaps easier to edit & control
Good luck on however you proceed

The machines have 8gb of RAM and Revit (64bit) is never reporting over 1.4gb being used. I suspected it was simply too many sub regions. Unfortunately the site is very flowing without any really nice places to split it up but I guess we'll just have to make do. Thanks for the help. :)

Simplify your topos and get rid of points you don't need.

I typically simplfy my surfaces to start at 1'-0" instead of the default 3". That reduces the complexity 2/3's and helps alot. Then don't use splines for your subregions, use tangent arcs. Splines might be your bigger issue. Then just create a grid, IE zone A,B,C,D and split your surface into smaller chunks if necessary. We did a few 700 acre site models divided down into small pieces. How big is your site? You won't beable to do more than conceptual site work on large sites.
