railing visibility

A couple of questions about railings:

Does anyone know how to dimension to railings? I can snap a dim to the corner of some rails and to nothing on others, still other times I have been able to snap a dim to the side of a rail. Anybody know what causes this odd behavior (surely not me).

Secondly. Is it possible to make the railing hide the lines of the stairs below it?

Railings have reference points that you can select and dimension to by tabbing. Typically Outside, Centre and Inside.



Secondly. Is it possible to make the railing hide the lines of the stairs below it? This problem has been around for time, and remains annoying.
