Place objects on surface

I have imported a surface from Civil3d and I want to place a fence that follows the surface around my site. How do I go about setting that up?

Not possible natively. I have heard hints of people making it work some how but I don't know how it's done.

Whats the point of having the ability to bring in a surface? I was hoping this would be a work around for creating a great looking fence to bring into Navisworks. The Revit models look really good when imported but if i can't place them at the correct elevation it won't work.
