I'm using Revit 2012 and am trying to get frosted glass to display properly but it's not working - it just looks like regular clear glass. I've created a new material and assigned the default "frosted" appearance property set but it still looks clear. I've turned off the transparency and played with some of the other settings but nothing is working. I'd like it to look frosted in the "realistic" visual style but it doesn't even look right when I render the image. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Any advice?

I've also tried using the different colored glass options and those don't change the appearance either - everything just looks like clear glass :(

Ok, here's another problem. When I create a new material (by essentially copying one that's already in the list) I can't get the material to change appearance. So if I copy Default Wall (which is solid gray in color) I can't change it to anything else - doesn't matter if I'm trying to make it glass, tile, wood, etc. I can't get it to change. What's going on?

I'm having the same problem, and I haven't been able to figure it out either. Can anyone help?

It turns out the color is changing in model, but something about how Revit renders makes any changes very hard to see. The only way I could prove the color is changing was by changing the glass panels to dark red and render them - THEN you can see the change. But any changes using blue basically doesn't render.

I'm not sure if this helps with your problem, but I figured out that it was in the materials setting. I had the "use render appearance for shading" box un-checked and the default color of gray was selected, which basically means that no matter what material I changed it to, it was going to show up gray. As soon as I checked the box it changed the color to the material color, or I could keep the box un-checked and change the color to whatever I needed (instead of gray).

Place the door you want to change. Enter the Edit Family command and highlight the glass. Go to your Properties Browser and click the "..." icon on the Materials row. Click on the Glass material in the left side and duplicate it. It'll be in the bottom left corner of the pop up window. Rename as "Glass Frosted." Click on the Appearance Property Sets tab at the top and browse to the glass option. Scroll through the swatches listed to the right and choose the one named Frosted. Click Apply and then click OK. You can change the settings to make the glass look exactly how you want.
I wasted about an hour trying to figure this out and one of my co-workers, referred to as "The Waller" gave me much needed guidance in my life. Hope this helps! :)
