Permanently apply XRef 'clip'?

I found this question in a few very dated threads, but figured I would ask again hoping for new CAD functionality.

A have one file with many plans referenced and clipped (XCLIP) to match the information relevant to my project. With so many references the file is VERY heavy and slows down my other references, sheets, etc.

Is there any way to 'clip' these references permanently and include only the relevant information?

If you open the xref files, and do a SaveAs, you can click the Tools pulldown in the upper right of the file save dialog, On the DWG Options tab, set the index type to "Spatial and Layer".

Then run the Options command, and on the "Open and Save" tab, ensure that demand load for xref's is "enabled with copy"

Acad then should only load into memory the pieces that it needs to display IIRC
