View Full Version : Void Cut Two Walls
I received a model from a structural engineer that has voids cutting out the base of the wall for void form. I am cutting the model up into pieces per our pour breaks to use the model for construction. When I split the walls sometimes the void form is cutting both walls as intended and sometimes it only cuts one wall. See attached image (I raised the voids up in the wall so you can see them better, they belong at the wall base). In cases where the void now only cuts one wall I can't figure out how to make the void cut both walls. The void is a separate generic model void family.

Try using Join Geometry and select both walls and then use Cut Geometry on both walls with the Void.

this is the issue puzzled me for quite a long time.
see attached RVT, i simplified window family and replaced opening cut w/ void, see the results for different cases, sorry for using RME instead of RAC as i'm now working in MEP firm.
the reason i want to explore in depth here is that i wrote an API before for my previous company (home builder) which will automatically create sidings for stud walls -> case 4, but window's void won't cut through 2nd wall (siding) unless you join 2 walls -> case 5, the most interesting thing is that it do cut through 2nd wall even though 2 walls are not joined -> case 2 & 3.
since joining 2 walls are not available in current API (wish i'm wrong!?), i have to do much much more complicatied coding -> basically get (siding) wall profile w/ all openings included.
i don't know if anyone have better solution or workaround before my API wish can be realized, 2013 perhaps?
Cliff. Thank you that worked. I joined the two walls and copied the void into place and it cut both walls. After that I could unjoin the walls (since I wanted to represent a pour break) and the void still cuts both walls.

Hi Ning Zhou
Great example in the file there!
I know this a while ago, but this crops up now and again. The two wall in example 2 & 3 are in fact joined. but they are joined automatically. You can test this by seeing that the grips at the end of the walls is set to 'Allow Join'. If you draw the same two walls again, but with the end grip set to 'Disallow Join' you will see that the opening only cuts one wall. But as mentioned in this thread you can (allow them to) join them for the purpose of making the cut and then unjoin them, the cut will remain over both hosts.
